National Initiative Targets Revival of Arts & Culture in Universities

A national initiative has been outlined to revive and develop cultural and artistic activity across universities, through cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Higher Education.

Implementation will take place through the National Centre for Theatre, Music and Popular Arts under the Theatre Sector, in coordination with multiple Culture Ministry bodies. T

he programme focuses on restoring the role of university theatre and expanding artistic and literary activity on campus, while identifying and nurturing young talent through sustained platforms for training, production and performance.

Universities have been instructed to activate cultural and artistic programmes aligned with the initiative’s framework.

According to the Theatre Sector, the plan seeks to reposition theatre, visual arts, music and cinema as permanent fixtures of campus life, strengthening coordination between cultural institutions and higher education.

The National Centre for Theatre, Music and Popular Arts said the initiative was prepared over several phases and will be rolled out gradually. Specialised workshops will be delivered by professional artists affiliated with the Ministry of Culture.

Theatre training will cover acting, directing, writing, set design, lighting, music and singing. Visual arts tracks include painting, sculpture, graphics and visual design, while cinema workshops focus on screenwriting, cinematography, editing, directing and criticism.

Literary programmes will address the novel, short story, poetry and essay. Universities will allocate theatres, halls and exhibition spaces on and off campus to host activities and showcases.

Annual regional festivals in theatre, cinema and visual arts are planned, culminating in a national festival recognising outstanding student work.
