Rare Mummified Falcon From Ancient Egypt on Sale at Abu Dhabi Art

A rare mummified falcon, dating back over 2,600 years, is set to go on sale at Abu Dhabi Art this week, with a price tag of AED 329,324 (USD 89,660). This remarkable artefact, which remains in its original wooden sarcophagus carved in the shape of a falcon, is one of the few fully intact examples of its kind.

The mummified bird, known as The God of the Pharaoh, was acquired by its current private Austrian collector after being exhibited in France in the 1980s. The sarcophagus, measuring 55cm in length, features a painted head and the body wrapped in linen cloth. An X-ray reveals that the skeleton is well-preserved, with its wings folded similarly to a human mummy. Notably, the right wing is broken, indicating the falcon may have been a sacrificial offering.

This artefact originates from Egypt's 26th dynasty (6th to 7th century BC), and its sarcophagus lid is intricately shaped to resemble the ancient Egyptian god Horus, associated with protection, the sun, and the sky. According to Hugo Wetscherek, owner of Antiquariat Inlibris, which is handling the sale, the rarity of this item makes it a valuable addition to any collection, with its value expected to rise over time.

Abu Dhabi Art, running from November 20th to 24th at Manarat Al Saadiyat, showcases global artists and attracts collectors from around the world.
