UAE Community Platform Mama ME Receives Funding From Flat6Lab
The platform seeks to serve as a safe and welcoming space for mothers, protecting maternal and mental health
UAE community-based app, Mama ME, which offers a safe space connecting like-minded mothers in the country, has secured an undisclosed seed investment from startup accelerator Flat6Labs Bahrain.
Sumayya Sarwar, the app’s founder and CEO, found herself juggling her dentistry and parental responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, and saw a gap in the market given the absence of apps helping facilitate community-building between mothers, or establishing neighbourly connections.
The platform, founded in April 2020, offers support to pregnant women and mothers by connecting them with like-minded women, or women in similar situations, based on geographical location and age of children. It seeks to serve as a space to discuss experiences with motherhood and to find support for protecting mental health.
Following the investment, Sarwar said that “the mom community has really come together to support one another this past year. I am grateful that Mama ME can provide a platform that is safe, welcoming and judgement free to all the mothers out there.”
She added that “maternal mental health is a crucial aspect of all mothers' lives and the team at Mama ME wants to be there to support every woman.”
Saleh Abbas, Managing Director of Flat6Labs in Bahrain, added: “Flat6Labs is delighted to have MamaME as part of our 7th cohort in Bahrain, alongside a group of innovative and fast-growing startups. Through our program, these startups will benefit from world-class training, mentoring and coaching that will propel their growth over the next few months. We look forward to charting the progress of MamaME along its promising entrepreneurial journey.”
Mama ME will use the new funds to develop and refine its technology, as well as expand its services and reach across the MENA region.
