265,000 Divorce Cases Reported in Egypt in 2023
In 2023, Egypt saw 265,606 divorce cases, a 1.6% decrease from 2022, while marriage contracts rose by 3.4%, according to CAPMAS.
In 2023, Egypt recorded 265,606 divorce cases, down from 269,834 in 2022, marking a 1.6% decrease, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The total number of marriage contracts rose to 961,220, compared to 929,428 in the previous year, indicating a 3.4% increase.
Urban areas accounted for 150,488 divorce cases, making up 56.7% of total divorces, which is a 3.7% decrease from 2022. In rural areas, 115,118 divorces were noted, representing 43.3% of total cases, reflecting a 1.4 percent increase.
In terms of marriage contracts, urban areas recorded 388,696 contracts, a 1.1% increase from 384,468 in 2022, while rural areas saw a rise to 572,524 contracts, a 5.1% increase compared to 544,960 last year.
The age group with the highest percentage of grooms was 25 to 30 years old, totaling 400,846 contracts, with an average age of 30.3 years. For brides, the most significant percentage was in the 20 to 25 age group, with 379,246 contracts and an average age of 24.8 years.
Regarding educational levels, the majority of grooms and brides had secondary education, accounting for 39.4% and 31.4% of contracts, respectively. Aswan had the highest marriage rate at 16.5 per 1,000, while Giza recorded the lowest at 5.9 per 1,000.
