Abu Dhabi Private Sector Introduces 90-Day Maternity Leave

Abu Dhabi has announced a new policy granting 90 days of maternity leave to Emirati women working in the private sector. This extension applies to mothers who give birth from September 1st, 2024, onwards, and is part of the Emirati Family Growth Support Programme, set to be implemented over five years.

The new policy increases the current maternity leave from 60 days to 90 days for eligible private sector employees, aligning more closely with the three months of paid maternity leave already offered to public sector employees. Previously, private sector employees were entitled to only 60 days of leave, with 45 days fully paid and the remaining 15 days half paid.

To qualify for the extended leave, Emirati mothers must possess a family book issued in Abu Dhabi and obtain a no-objection certificate from their employer. Applications for the extended leave must be submitted within 30 days of the child's birth, provided the birth occurs on or after September 1st, 2024. Additionally, applicants must provide a valid salary certificate and complete bank account details, including the IBAN.

This new policy is part of a broader initiative aimed at supporting family growth and well-being among Emiratis. As part of the program, additional support will be provided through a 'home visit service' by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority, which will monitor the baby’s development and support the well-being of new parents.

In addition to the extended maternity leave, Emirati couples will benefit from various initiatives, including financial relief packages, marriage loans, loan deductions, and rental assistance, all designed to support the well-being of Emirati families.
