Al Ahly Crowned 2025 Women’s Basketball League Africa Champions

Al Ahly Sporting Club won the 2025 Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) championship after defeating Ferroviário de Maputo 75–56 in the final held in Cairo. Al Ahly set the tone early, opening the game with a 29–17 first quarter and building a commanding lead that reached 27 points at its peak. The Egyptian side went into halftime ahead by 19 points, controlling both ends of the floor through disciplined defence and efficient scoring. Ferroviário de Maputo mounted a brief comeback late in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 57–47, but Al Ahly responded decisively. A 20–4 run in the final period shut down any hopes of a turnaround, sealing the title in front of the home crowd. Raneem Elgedawy delivered a standout performance, finishing with 29 points and 18 rebounds, while shooting 11-for-18 from the field. She was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Nadine Mohamed also made a key contribution, recording 18 points and 10 rebounds. The victory carried added weight for Al Ahly. The club had previously reached the WBLA final in 2019 and 2024, only to lose both times to Ferroviário de Maputo, making the 2025 triumph a long-awaited breakthrough against the same opponents. The final also marked a historic milestone for head coach Tarek Abouzied, who became the first coach to win both men’s and women’s African club basketball titles. His latest success came nine years after guiding Al Ahly’s men’s team to a continental championship — also in Cairo. Organised by FIBA Africa, the Women’s Basketball League Africa brings together leading women’s clubs from across the continent through a group stage and knockout format. Al Ahly has become the second Egyptian club to claim the crown in this competition after Alexandria Sporting in 2022 and 2023.
