Child Marriage Reports in Egypt Rise 29% in 2025
Authorities recorded higher child marriage reports in 2025, with interventions stopping over 200 cases.
Reports of child marriage in Egypt increased by 29% in 2025, according to the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood.
The council said its Child Helpline received around 27,700 reports during the year, up by 6,276 from 2024, averaging nearly 76 reports per day. Child marriage cases accounted for around 280 reports during the 2025 fiscal year, representing 9% of exploitation-related reports and 13% of risk-related reports.
This marked a 12% increase compared to the previous year. Authorities said interventions prevented 217 child marriages, while legal measures were taken in relation to the remaining cases.
According to Sahar El Sonbati, head of the council, cases remain concentrated in several governorates, including Dakahlia, Kafr El Sheikh, Alexandria and Sohag.
The council has submitted proposals in its annual report to introduce legislative amendments, including a law to ban child marriage, as part of broader efforts to strengthen child protection frameworks.
Officials said coordination with national entities will continue to support integrated strategies aimed at addressing child marriage and safeguarding children’s rights.
