Dar Al-Ifta Sets Zakat al-Fitr at EGP 35 Per Person for 2025

Dar Al-Ifta has announced that the minimum Zakat al-Fitr amount is set at EGP 35 per person for 2025. The decision was made in coordination with the Islamic Research Academy, under the leadership of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr Ahmed El-Tayeb.

The calculation is based on the price of wheat, considered a staple food in Egypt. Each individual’s Zakat al-Fitr obligation is equivalent to 2.04 kilograms of wheat. With the price of an ardeb (150 kg) of wheat set at EGP 2,000 this year, the cost per kilogram is approximately EGP 13.33. This results in a calculated Zakat amount of around EGP 27.19 per person, which has been rounded up to EGP 35.

Regarding the timing of payment, Dar Al-Ifta emphasised that the preferred practice is to pay Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It also clarified that it is permissible to give Zakat in cash instead of staple food, as this provides greater flexibility for those in need.

Additionally, the fidya - the compensation for those unable to fast due to legitimate reasons - has been set at EGP 30 per fasting day.
