East Port Said Ranks 3rd Globally in World Bank Port Performance Index

East Port Said ranked third worldwide and first in the region in the World Bank’s 2024 Container Port Performance Index, up from 10th place in 2022 after climbing seven positions in two years. The index evaluates efficiency across more than 350 container ports, including vessel turnaround time, cargo handling productivity, infrastructure quality, digitisation, and integration with wider transport and logistics networks. The 2024 report identified East Port Said amongst the most improved ports globally between 2020 and 2024. The Suez Canal Economic Zone stated that the ranking reflects operational gains supported by terminal expansions, the rollout of digital port community systems, and improved vessel scheduling that shortened waiting times. A major expansion is underway at the Suez Canal Container Terminal in East Port Said to increase annual handling capacity by 2.1 million containers, bringing total capacity to 6.6 million containers. The Suez Canal Container Terminal, operated by AP Moller-Maersk, has invested in capacity and infrastructure upgrades in coordination with the Suez Canal Authority and the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Located at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, East Port Said was inaugurated in 2004 and developed as a transhipment hub serving mega-ships on major east–west shipping routes across the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal.
