Egypt-Built Hydropower Plant & Dam Megaproject Inaugurated in Tanzania
At a cost of USD 3 billion, the man-made reservoir is one of the biggest developmental projects in Africa.
The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and Dam (JNHPP), an Egyptian-Tanzanian megaproject in Tanzania, has officially been inaugurated. The project’s construction was completed in October 2022 through the efforts of Egyptian companies Arab Contractors Company and El-Sewedy Electric, as well as over 2,500 Egyptian and Tanzanian engineers and workers.
At a cost of USD 3 billion, the man-made reservoir is one of the biggest developmental projects in Africa, encompassing an area of 158,000 square kilometres with a storage capacity of 34 billion cubic metres, a length of 1,025 metres, and a water level of 130 metres. The JNHPP is set to produce 2,115 megawatts and 5,920 GWh of power annually.
The project is part of Egypt’s national vision to support sustainable development initiatives across Africa, and to engage in ongoing collaborations between Nile basin countries.
