Egypt Certified Malaria-Free by World Health Organization
The historic certification indicates that the transmission chain has been interrupted for at least three consecutive years.
Egypt has received a special certification from the World Health Organization (WHO) for being malaria-free after nearly a century of dedicated effort to eradicate the disease.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised this achievement as "truly historic," highlighting the fact that malaria has plagued Egypt since ancient civilization. The journey to this point began in the 1920s, when measures were taken to limit human-mosquito contact. The present-day certification indicates that the transmission chain has been interrupted for at least three consecutive years.
While Egypt joins the ranks of only 44 countries globally that have achieved this status, the WHO urges vigilance to maintain this accomplishment and prevent the re-establishment of transmission.
