Egypt Ranks as Africa’s Second-Largest Solar Energy Produce

Egypt has moved up five places in Africa’s solar energy rankings, securing second place with 707 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity by the end of 2024, according to data from the Solar Energy Industry Association in Africa. South Africa leads with 1,235 MW, while Zambia ranks third with 74.8 MW.

Solar power projects in Africa are set to reach a total capacity of 40 gigawatts (GW) in 2024, with Egypt and South Africa accounting for a significant portion of the continent’s clean energy investments. Egypt alone contributes to 78% of Africa’s total solar energy alongside South Africa.

Globally, solar capacity in 2024 is projected to represent 0.5% of total energy production, while Africa’s capacity is expected to reach 19.2 GW.
