Egypt Recovers Ancient Artefacts From the United States of America
Amongst the recovered artefacts are a gilded wooden mask, an alabaster vase, and part of a red granite statue.
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Dr. Badel Abdel Ati visited the headquarters of the Egyptian Consulate General in New York City to inspect several ancient Egyptian artefacts, which have recently been recovered from the United States.
The visit took place whilst the minister was in New York for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and marks the recovery of numerous Egyptian artefacts from the ancient Pharaonic and Ptolemaic eras.
The pieces, including a gilded wooden mask, a foot from a red granite statue, and an alabaster vase, were recovered by the Egyptian Consulate General in New York in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the US Attorney General’s Office in Manhattan, and the Egyptian Attorney General’s Office. The artefacts will now be transported back to Egypt.
Over the past 10 years, Egypt has successfully recovered more than 29,000 artefacts smuggled out of the country to locations around the world, with new recoveries happening more and more frequently. In August, three artefacts were discovered in an antique store in the Netherlands, and repatriated to Egypt.
