Egypt Signs USD 3.38 Million Health Deal With WHO & Japan
The plan covers equipment, training and border hospital readiness as Egypt treats evacuees from Gaza and Sudan.
Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population signed a USD 3.38 million cooperation agreement with the World Health Organization and the government of Japan to strengthen emergency medical services amid regional humanitarian pressures linked to Gaza and Sudan.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar oversaw the signing ceremony, which was attended by Japanese ambassador Iwai Fumio, United Nations resident coordinator in Egypt Elena Panova, and WHO representative in Egypt Dr Nima Abid.
According to the ministry, the project focuses on three pillars: supplying hospitals participating in the national emergency plan with critical medical equipment, training healthcare teams on intensive and critical care protocols, and enhancing preparedness in border governorates to support injured individuals and displaced populations.
The ministry stated that Egypt has received thousands of patients from the Gaza Strip requiring complex surgeries and specialised treatment, with more than 90,000 comprehensive medical examinations conducted at the Rafah border crossing.
Since the start of the crisis, 170 hospitals across 24 governorates have been prepared, with more than 13,000 inpatient beds and around 2,000 intensive care beds allocated. A total of 63,000 medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, have been deployed.
Between November 2023 and July 2025, Egypt allocated 209 ambulances to transport wounded and sick Palestinians from Gaza to Egyptian hospitals. During that period, 18,560 injured Palestinians and accompanying relatives received treatment in 172 hospitals nationwide.
Egyptian medical teams carried out 90,850 medical examinations and surgical procedures, covering emergency trauma interventions and specialised follow-up care. Evacuations are coordinated through triage and referral procedures at Rafah before transfer to specialised hospitals across multiple governorates.
