Egypt’s U16 Women’s Basketball Team Wins First-Ever African Title
The young Pharaohs defeated Côte d’Ivoire 66–54 in the final, after an unbeaten run through the group stage and knockout rounds.

Egypt’s U16 women’s basketball team made history in Kigali, Rwanda, clinching the FIBA Afrobasket U16 championship for the first time. The victory also secured the team’s spot at the 2026 FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup in the Czech Republic. The young Pharaohs defeated Côte d’Ivoire 66–54 in the final, after an unbeaten run through the group stage and knockout rounds. Egypt had earlier overcome Cameroon in the semi-finals, sealing qualification to the World Cup. Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy congratulated the team, praising the players’ outstanding performance and the efforts of the Egyptian Basketball Federation under Amr Moselhy to restore Egypt’s continental standing. This marks Egypt’s first U16 Afrobasket triumph since the competition began in 2009, with the team finishing the tournament undefeated.
