Egypt to Crack Down on Sale of Wild Animals
The Ministry of Local Development is ramping up efforts to stop the 'Friday Market', which regularly sees street vendors sell exotic animals like crocodiles, snakes and turtles.
To stop the sale and trade of wild animals, the Ministry of Local Development is pursuing efforts to shut down the ‘Friday Market’, which regularly sees a slew of street vendors selling exotic animals in Cairo’s Khalifa district.
With the help of police and veterinarians, the campaign’s most recent seizures rescued eight snakes, four reptiles, three birds, three crocodiles of various sizes, and three turtles from illegal sale. The wild animals were found in poor condition, having been held in narrow cages in the streets.
The animals have been taken to the Giza Zoo for care until investigations and legal procedures are complete.
