Elephantine Island's Aswan Museum to Undergo Renovations

The Aswan Museum on the idyllic Elephantine Island will be renovated after being closed for ten years. Established in 1898, the museum was initially designed as a resting place for the English engineer Sir William Willcocks, before being converted into a museum in 1917. One of the oldest regional museums in Egypt, the Aswan Museum housed an inimitable assortment of artifacts from Nubia and other findings discovered on Elephantine Island.

The development of the museum will include the restoration of the building, the display in the annex (the building currently open to visitors) and the surrounding garden. The Museum’s Display Scenario Committee is currently curating the pieces that will be displayed, which will include artefacts discovered by the German archaeological missions’ work on Elephantine Island since 1969.
