Environment Ministry Seizes Banned Wildlife at Cairo Market Inspection
Live and taxidermied protected species were confiscated at Diana Market in Al Azbakiya following reports of illegal trade.
The Ministry of Environment has seized live and taxidermied wild animals and birds prohibited from trade during a joint inspection at Diana Market on Emad El Din Street in Cairo’s Al Azbakiya district.
The operation followed directives to investigate social media posts showing the illegal sale of wildlife and was carried out in coordination with local authorities.
According to the ministry, the inspection identified violations of Law 4 of 1994, as amended by Law 9 of 2009, and its executive regulations governing the protection of wildlife. Confiscated live animals included two horned owls, one eagle, four Egyptian chameleons and one Egyptian tortoise.
Taxidermied specimens seized during the campaign comprised one Egyptian mongoose, five red foxes, five falcons and one African grey parrot. The ministry stated that all seized creatures have been confiscated in favour of the Ministry of Environment, with legal measures underway against those involved.
Live animals and birds will receive veterinary care before being released back into their natural habitats, while taxidermied specimens will be transferred to one of the ministry’s wildlife exhibitions.
The Ministry of Environment said inspection campaigns are being intensified in coordination with local authorities and relevant bodies to enforce wildlife protection laws and curb illegal trade.
It also urged citizens to report any unlawful practices involving wildlife to support conservation efforts and the protection of biodiversity.
