First Phase of East Cairo Monorail to Open on November 9th

The first phase of the East Cairo Monorail is set to open on November 9th, 2025, linking Greater Cairo with New Cairo and the New Capital. The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, who added that the launch will coincide with the trial operation of Egypt’s new high-speed electric train. Stretching 56.5 kilometres, the East Cairo Monorail will run from Stadium Station in Nasr City to the Operations and Control Centre in the New Capital, serving 22 stations along its route. It will connect with Metro Line 3 at Stadium Station and with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) at the Arts and Culture Station, creating a seamless link between central Cairo and its expanding eastern suburbs. Once fully completed, the monorail network will span 100 kilometres and 35 stations, including a proposed West Nile line, forming part of Greater Cairo’s integrated transport system. Developed by a consortium of Alstom, Orascom Construction, and Arab Contractors, the East Cairo Monorail will feature driverless trains operated from a central control hub in the New Capital. The system includes onboard cameras, fire-safety sensors, and real-time monitoring tools, while stations are equipped with platform screen doors, a first in Egypt, along with digital displays, voice-guidance systems, and tactile walkways for passengers with visual impairments. Each fully electric train can carry up to 560 passengers and reach speeds of 80 km/h, serving around 10,000 passengers per direction per hour. The four-car trains can be expanded to eight cars based on ridership demand and include CCTV coverage, wheelchair spaces, and dedicated evacuation routes for emergencies.
