Glimmering Chandelier in Muhammad Ali Mosque Restored
The Mosque of Mohamed Ali’s main chandelier has been fully repaired after a three-year restoration project.
The Great Mosque of Mohamed Ali, the historic religious monument found in the Citadel of Cairo, has just received an enlightening renovation with the repair and restoration of its main chandelier.
The Supreme Council of Antiquities completed the restoration of the chandelier as part of the overall maintenance of the Cairo Citadel. The repair process of the chandelier lasted for three years and entailed the reassembly of some of its most sensitive pieces, mechanical and chemical cleaning, and electric maintenance. The mosque was built during the reign of Mohamed Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848, and is known for its spacious central dome housing the recently restored chandelier, which weighs more than two tonnes.
