Government Increases Electricity Prices With Up to 50 Percent Hike
These new rates have already been implemented for prepaid meters.
Sources from the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy indicate a new set of electricity price increases for 2024, affecting households across various consumption levels, the sources reported to Al Masry Al Youm.
For household consumption, the price increase varies across segments. The first segment, covering consumption from 0 to 50 kilowatts, will see a change from 58 piasters to 68 piasters, marking a 17% increase. In the second segment, which includes usage from 51 to 100 kilowatts, prices will rise from 68 piasters to 78 piasters, a 15% increase. The third segment, which encompasses consumption up to 200 kilowatts, will experience an increase from 83 piasters to 95 piasters, reflecting a 14% rise.
For those in the fourth segment, covering 201 to 350 kilowatts, the price will jump from 125 piasters to 155 piasters, a 24% increase. The fifth segment, for consumption between 350 to 650 kilowatts, will see a more substantial rise, with prices increasing from 140 piasters to 195 piasters, representing a 39% hike.
The most significant change will affect the sixth segment, where consumption between 650 to 1,000 kilowatts will now cost EGP 2.10 per kilowatt, up from 140 piasters, marking a 50% increase. Finally, for the seventh segment, which includes consumption over 1,000 kilowatts, the price will increase from 165 piasters to EGP 2.23 per kilowatt, a 35% rise.
These new rates have already been implemented for prepaid meters, while consumers using old and mechanical meters will see the increases reflected in their September bills.
