Ministry of Environment Sets Up National Network Monitoring Wastewater
The network and regulations come at a time that Egypt’s water sources face increased attention and scrutiny.
Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad has announced the establishment of a national network for monitoring industrial wastewater pollutants.
The new regulations stipulate that facilities discharging into aquatic sites must install sensors connected to the national network to ensure continuous monitoring of the water environment.
It comes at a time when Egypt’s water sources face increased attention, and obligations to protect the natural environment against different forms of pollution becomes more demanding in light of climate change.
So far, the Abo El Hol For Oils & Detergents company, which discharges wastewater into Lake Mariout, has been integrated within the national network, with plans to link other companies including Amreya Petroleum Refining Company and Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals.
