After celebrating World Sign Language Day, the Ministry of Social Solidarity has launched an initiative to spread sign language literacy across Egypt in order to help destigmatize people with hearing impairments and better integrate them into society.
As part of the initiative, the Ministry of Social Solidarity partnered with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to develop ‘Taeel’, an electronic platform that helps provide people with hearing impairments with job opportunities. Additionally, the ministry has launched a number of workshops to teach workers in rehabilitation offices sign language across a number of governorates.
According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, 4.2% of the total population in Egypt is made up of people with hearing impairments.
