New Climate Plan to Be Released Ahead of COP29 to Cut Emissions

The United Arab Emirates is set to unveil its new climate plan under the Paris Agreement, outlining a strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions from 2025 to 2035. This announcement is expected before the COP29 climate summit in November 2024, positioning the UAE as one of the first major emitters to take such proactive steps ahead of the February 2025 deadline.
Sultan Al Jaber, president of last year's COP28 climate summit in Dubai, announced that the nation will submit its updated "nationally determined contribution (NDC)" to the United Nations.
Designed to motivate nations to adopt new emissions-reduction targets and measures, these contributions aim to keep countries on track to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and prevent global temperatures from rising beyond 1.5°C. The Paris Agreement mandates that nations present new and stronger NDCs every five years, underscoring the need for ongoing commitment and action in the global fight against climate change.
