Palestinian Journalist Wael Al-Dahdouh Receives Freedom of Press Award

The Egyptian Journalists Syndicate has honoured famed Palestinian writer and journalist Wael Al-Dahdouh with its Freedom of Press Award.

Khaled El Balshy, the Head of the Journalists Syndicate, revealed that Al-Dahdouh has refused the monetary prize associated with the award, and instead has directed that the EGP 50,000 prize money be used in the treatment of wounded Palestinian journalists receiving treatment in Egypt.

Al-Dahdouh has been personally affected by the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, having had his wife, three children and grandson all killed by Israeli strikes.

Al-Dahdouh is the Gaza bureau chief for Al Jazeera, and is currently receiving medical treatment for maiming resulting from an Israeli airstrike that killed his colleague, 45-year-old Al Jazeera cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa.

The award was received on behalf of Al-Dahdouh by the President of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Nasser Abu Bakr.

More than 155 journalists have so been killed in targeted instances by the Israeli forces, in direct contravention of international law.
