Ptolemaic-Roman Era Funerary Complex Found Near Fayoum

A large funerary complex dating back to the Ptolemaic and Roman eras in Egyptian history has been discovered by an Egyptian archaeological expedition working in Jirzah, a town near Fayoum.

According to the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the discovery included several funerary portraits that were prominent under Roman rule, along with a terracotta statue of Isis-Aphrodite discovered in a wooden sarcophagus.

The funerary’s floors were constructed of limestone and decorated with colourful tiles. A number of sarcophagi, clay vessels, jars, and the remains of four pillars were discovered throughout. Papyrus transcripts found in Jirzah detailed the social and economic realities of Egyptian and Greek citizens inhabiting the area at the time, adding a new perspective to their history.
