RTA Introduces Solar-Powered Rail Bus for Greener Public Transport

The Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched the Rail Bus project, a solar-powered mass transit initiative designed to provide a more sustainable and cost-effective public transportation option.

The system, developed in collaboration with American start-up RAIL BUS Inc., aims to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing urban mobility. The vehicle will accommodate up to 40 passengers, operating at a speed of 100 km/h, with each 11.5-metre-long pod featuring 22 seats.

A prototype of the solar-powered rail bus will be unveiled at the 2025 World Governments Summit in Dubai, scheduled from February 11th to the 13th. Over the next two years, technical studies will be conducted to assess the feasibility of the system, followed by the selection of pilot operation sites. Cost estimates indicate that the project will be 20% to 30% more affordable than comparable transport systems.

RAIL BUS Inc. seeks to pioneer fully solar-powered mass transit, prioritising sustainability and efficiency. The system will incorporate solar-powered tracks, ensuring a stable energy supply while minimising carbon emissions. The vehicles will feature an aerodynamic, 3D-printed design optimized for urban environments, with the use of carbon fiber and other eco-friendly materials to further reduce their environmental impact. Noise emissions are expected to be low, and reliability and safety will be overseen by a dedicated expert team.
