Riyadh Metro Red Line to Extend to Diriyah

Royal Commission for Riyadh City has awarded the contract to design, construct, and complete an 8.4 kilometre extension of the Red Line of the Riyadh Metro, connecting King Saud University with the Diriyah Gate Development.

The extension will add five stations to the network and is intended to strengthen public transport links between educational, cultural, and residential areas of the city. Of the total length, 7.1 kilometres will be constructed as deep underground tunnels, while 1.3 kilometres will be elevated track.

Two of the new stations will be located at King Saud University, serving the medical city, health colleges, and the main university concourse. Three additional stations will be built in Diriyah, including one planned as a future interchange with Line 7. Project completion is scheduled in approximately six years.

According to the commission, the extension forms part of the continued rollout of Riyadh’s public transport network, aimed at improving connectivity between key districts and supporting long-term urban development. The works build on the wider Riyadh Public Transport Project, inaugurated in November 2024.

Since metro operations began in late 2024, ridership across the network has exceeded 173 million passengers, underscoring the role of the metro as the backbone of the capital’s public transport system.
