Riyadh Metro Stations Become Cultural Landmarks With New Artworks
Coinciding with the metro’s launch, Riyadh Art Unveils four monumental art works at major stations.
Riyadh Art, one of the world’s largest public art initiatives, has revealed four major artworks at metro stations across the Saudi capital, transforming them into cultural landmarks. The installations coincide with the Riyadh Metro launch and highlight Saudi Arabia’s commitment to integrating art into urban life.
At the King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Alexander Calder’s ‘Janey Waney’ and Robert Indiana’s iconic ‘LOVE (Red Outside Blue Inside)’ greet commuters. Calder’s dynamic sculpture celebrates kinetic art, while Indiana’s renowned work symbolises universal themes of connection and hope.
Meanwhile, the Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station, designed by Snohetta, features 'Ugo Rondinone’s golden ‘The Sun’, symbolising energy and renewal, alongside Zaman Jassim’s ‘When the Moon is Full’, inspired by Riyadh’s cultural heritage.
Led by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, Riyadh Art has integrated over 500 artworks by local and international artists into Riyadh since 2019, engaging more than six million visitors. The program supports cultural innovation, community enrichment, and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, positioning the city as a global hub for contemporary art.
