Saudi Arabia Deploys World's Largest AI Road Inspection Fleet
The 18-vehicle fleet, described as the world’s largest of its kind, uses AI and five scanning systems to assess road safety.

Saudi Arabia’s Roads General Authority (RGA) has deployed what is being described as the world’s largest and most advanced AI-powered road inspection fleet, with 18 specialised vehicles now operating across the Kingdom’s critical transport corridors. The initiative supports the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objective to improve national road quality and public safety.
The fleet integrates five advanced scanning systems to assess surface damage, road smoothness, structural stability, and skid resistance—key factors in determining road safety and service quality. Seven of the vehicles are equipped with high-resolution surface damage scanners featuring cameras, lasers, GPS and real-time data storage systems, enabling immediate maintenance responses. Four vehicles assess ride quality using the International Roughness Index, while others measure pavement layer thickness via radar or detect road deflection under vehicle loads. A dedicated unit simulates wet-weather conditions to evaluate friction and braking safety.
To complement surface assessments, the fleet also includes a digital imaging system that inspects roadside infrastructure such as signs and barriers, supporting preventive maintenance across the Kingdom’s 73,000 km intercity road network.
According to RGA, the AI-powered fleet is a step toward improving road reliability and reducing traffic fatalities to below five per 100,000 people by 2030. For logistics operators, especially those managing freight and long-haul transport, the new system promises better visibility, faster repairs, and safer driving conditions along key commercial and pilgrimage routes.
