Small Scale Solar Power Systems to Be Set Up by UNDP in Rural Egypt
The Japanese government is launching a variety of solar power systems in rural Egypt to support the country’s environmental efforts ahead of COP27.
Asserting the significance of solar power in tackling climate change ahead of COP27, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) partnered up with the Japanese government to launch small-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems in rural Egypt. Funded by the Japanese government, the project will prioritise villages included in Egypt’s ‘Haya Karima’ initiative, supporting Egypt’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve access to clean energy.
The agreement builds on the work done by the award-winning Egypt PV project, which has implemented more than 132 solar power stations in 16 governorates across Egypt, and aims to scale up PV applications to support the country’s National Climate Change Strategy and introduce innovative technologies in the New Administrative Capital.
As the world sets its eyes on Sharm El Sheikh ahead of the highly anticipated convention, the coastal city is in the process of installing PV stations at Sharm El Sheikh Airport, amongst other locations.
