Road Accident Deaths in Egypt Fall by 10.3% in 2024

CAPMAS reports fewer road accident deaths in 2024, but injuries and train accidents have risen compared to 2023.

Road Accident Deaths in Egypt Fall by 10.3% in 2024

Road accident deaths in Egypt decreased by 10.3% in 2024, falling to 5,260 from 5,861 in 2023, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The Cairo Governorate recorded the highest number of fatalities at 766, while Suez reported the lowest with six deaths. April saw the deadliest month with 527 deaths, whereas November had the fewest at 384. Males accounted for the majority of fatalities at 4,397, while female deaths totaled 863. The age group under 15 experienced the most deaths with 1,219, while the under-5 group had the least at 218. Most deaths occurred among pedestrians, totaling 2,125, followed by passengers at 1,174.

The severity of road accidents, measured by deaths per 100 injured, dropped from 8.3 in 2023 to 6.9 in 2024, marking a 16.9% decline. The overall death rate per 100,000 people also fell by 12.5%, from 5.6 to 4.9.

Despite the decline in fatalities, the number of road accident injuries rose by 7.5%, reaching 76,362 compared to 71,016 in 2023. Dakahlia Governorate recorded the highest injury count with 15,563 cases, while Suez had the fewest with 39. October was the month with the highest number of injuries at 7,155, and February had the lowest at 5,241. Of the total injured, 61,853 were males and 14,509 were females. The under-15 age group again accounted for the most injuries at 24,745, followed by the under-25 group at 13,531, while individuals aged 65 and older had the fewest injuries with 2,004. Passengers were the most frequently injured group at 22,845, followed by drivers with 11,190. The injury rate per 100,000 people increased by 6.2%, rising from 67.5 to 71.7.

Train accidents also saw an increase, rising by 21.5% to reach 220 incidents in 2024 compared to 181 in 2023. The Central Region recorded the highest number of train accidents at 49, while the East Delta had the lowest with 31. A total of 57 people died and 104 were injured in train accidents. Passenger-related incidents led to 727 deaths and 324 injuries. Accidents involving railway authority employees caused 5 deaths and 225 injuries. The train accident rate was recorded at 0.02 per 10,000 people and 0.9 per million passengers. However, the severity of train accidents, measured by deaths per 100 injured, dropped significantly from 103.9 in 2023 to 54.8 in 2024.
