Standardized Fees for Electric Vehicle Charging Now in Effect in UAE
This move aims to regulate and standardize EV charging infrastructure across the UAE, replacing the currently varied rates.
A new UAE cabinet resolution has introduced a unified pricing structure for the charging of electric vehicles (EV) in the country. Service providers are now required to invoice a minimum of AED 1.20 plus VAT per kWh for ‘express’ charging, and AED 0.70 plus VAT per kWh for ‘slow’ charging. The new pricing structure is detailed in Cabinet resolution No. 81, which was published in the Official Gazette on July 8th, and will become effective from September 6th.
This move aims to regulate and standardize EV charging infrastructure across the UAE, replacing the currently varied rates. The Council of Ministers retains the authority to amend these fees as necessary, including making additions, deletions, or other adjustments to the fee structure.
UAEV, the first government-owned EV charging network, plans to install 100 charging stations across the country. Additionally, ADNOC group has revealed plans to install over 500 new fast and superfast chargers in the coming years. The demand for EVs has seen significant growth in the UAE, with sales almost quadrupling in 2023, reaching 11.3% from 3.7% in 2022.
This initiative is part of the UAE's broader efforts to promote sustainable transportation and transition to a greener economy. A national policy approved in 2023 aims to build a network of EV chargers, which is expected to reduce energy consumption in the transport sector by 20%.
