The government of Switzerland has returned a stolen fragment of a 3,400-year-old statue of Ramses II to Egypt. The fragment was a part of a group statue that was stolen from the Temple of Ramses II in Abydos between the late 1980s and early 1990s, and subsequently transited through different countries before arriving in Switzerland.
The fragment had been confiscated in Geneva as part of criminal proceedings. The Federal Office of Culture then handed over the fragment to the Egyptian embassy in Bern, the capital of Switzerland.
