Traffic Signals to Send Live Updates to Car Dashboards in Dubai

Dubai plans to connect traffic signals directly to car dashboards to deliver live in-vehicle updates across the city’s road network. The Roads and Transport Authority is developing an artificial intelligence enabled control platform, known as UX Fusion, that links signals with vehicles in real time to manage traffic flow citywide rather than at single intersections.

The system uses computer vision to analyse footage from roadside cameras, identify vehicle types and count pedestrians before feeding data into a central algorithm that coordinates movement across multiple junctions and corridors. In its next phase, the platform is designed to communicate information directly to cars, including green and red light countdowns, recommended speeds for safe crossing, and alerts about accidents or congestion ahead, with the aim of reducing reliance on phones while driving.

The Roads and Transport Authority stated that it is coordinating with several international car manufacturers to enable the data transmission to dashboards and establish the required infrastructure. The authority indicated a two to three year horizon for completing coordination and infrastructure setup, with the technology expected to appear on Dubai roads within three years.

Existing artificial intelligence systems in Dubai have improved intersection efficiency by up to 37% and reduced travel times by 10% to 20%, according to the Roads and Transport Authority. The initiative aligns with international vehicle to infrastructure programmes in cities such as Singapore, Seoul and Helsinki, where cars and traffic signals exchange real time information.
