Trial Passenger Train Crosses Sinai for First Time in 50 Years

A trial passenger train has crossed the Sinai Peninsula for the first time in 50 years, as part of the Egyptian government’s plans to revitalise its transportation sector and launch the 100 km long Al-Fardan-Bir al-Abd railway line.

The line is part of a broader 500 km long railway network connecting Al-Fardan, East Port Said, Bir al-Abd, Arish and Taba. The line hosted its first journey, a cargo train, on August 6th. The freight train carried 25 transit containers from Alexandria’s Container Terminal to East Port Said.

The reactivation of the line aims to focus on the transport of cargo between the ports of Arish and Taba.
