Egypt's Rail Capacity to Expand With 44 New Machines
The additions will bring the total number of operational railway machines to 91, supporting both ongoing infrastructure projects and routine rail maintenance across the country.

The Ministry of Transport has signed contracts to supply 44 new railway machines: 14 for the Egyptian National Railways Authority and 30 for the high-speed Light Rail Transit (LRT) network. The additions will bring the total number of operational railway machines to 91, supporting both ongoing infrastructure projects and routine rail maintenance across the country.
Over the past decade, the ministry has procured 16 railway construction machines. In parallel, 31 older machines - delivered more than 35 years ago - have remained in use, forming the current operating fleet of 47 machines.
The expansion of the machine fleet forms part of a broader modernisation strategy within Egypt’s railway sector. A total of 841 out of 1,120 targeted railway crossings have already undergone comprehensive upgrades. In addition, electronic gates and control systems have been installed at five key stations: Cairo, Giza, Sidi Gaber, Misr Station in Alexandria, and Damanhour.
These installations include reservation systems and e-payment infrastructure, designed to streamline passenger services.
