UAE's Largest AI Powered Diagnostic Lab Opens in Abu Dhabi

The largest AI-powered standalone diagnostic laboratory in the UAE has opened in Abu Dhabi. The seven-storey, 70,000 sq ft facility, developed by PureLab, a subsidiary of PureHealth, can process more than 30 million samples a year and will support a nationwide network of 140 internationally accredited laboratories.

Operating 24/7, the lab integrates artificial intelligence, robotics, energy-efficient infrastructure and advanced sample-transport and automation systems. It offers more than 1,800 test parameters across anatomical pathology, molecular genetics, infectious disease detection, histocompatibility for organ and bone marrow transplants, haematopathology and environmental testing, and is staffed by 1,300 consultants. The facility is designed with capacity for future expansion to meet national demand for high-volume, advanced diagnostics.

PureLab CEO Arindam Haldar said the facility will act as a “national cornerstone” for programmes including newborn screening, infectious disease surveillance and transplant compatibility. A key feature is the AI-enabled digital pathology platform using Whole Slide Imaging to convert traditional slides into high-resolution digital formats for AI-assisted analysis. As the central hub of the UAE’s Digital Pathology Initiative, the lab links oncology centres across the country for real-time remote slide viewing and virtual consultations.

Sustainability measures include rooftop solar panels, a fully hybrid transport fleet, digital reporting to eliminate paper use and energy-efficient infrastructure aligned with the UAE’s net-zero strategy. The platform enables healthcare providers to consolidate testing through a unified service while also supporting community-facing options such as walk-in diagnostics and home-testing pilots.
