World’s First Robotic Brain Tumour Surgery Done in Riyadh

The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh performed the world’s first robotic intracranial tumour resection, removing a 4.5 centimetre brain tumour from a 68 year old man using robotic arms. The patient, who had experienced severe headaches and loss of concentration, was discharged fully conscious within 24 hours, a recovery time reported as nearly four times faster than traditional brain surgeries.

The one-hour procedure was guided by a 3D optical system that provided a clear, magnified view of the brain, with advanced image guided navigation used to remove the tumour while protecting vital areas.

The institution said this procedure adds to its portfolio of robotic surgical operations, noting earlier world firsts in robotic heart and liver transplants. It reported being ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally among the top 250 academic medical centres for 2025, as well as recognition by Brand Finance and Newsweek lists for best hospitals, smart hospitals, and specialised hospitals.
