Around the World in a Bowl of Koshari

Once tasted, koshari - that jumbled pile of rice, macaroni, lentils, topped with fried onions  and chickpeas, oozing with a rich tomato sauce stuffed with a tangy hit of vinegar, the spice of chili, and a few drops of lemon juice - is not soon forgotten. It’s no surprise, then, that wherever Egyptians have gone, they’ve brought koshari with them, with restaurants serving up the iconic concoction scattered across all corners of the earth.

Whether you find yourself in New York, Paris or Sydney, and are overcome by that mysterious craving that only a bowl of koshari can satisfy, these restaurants have got you covered…

koshari Street, London

Tucked away in the heart of the British capital, just a stone’s throw from Leicester Square, koshari Street features its own signature sacred doqqa recipe - a mix of ground spices, nuts, and herbs, believed by many to be the  make or break of a good koshari.

koshari Abu Tareq, Jeddah

For many in Cairo, the soaring multi-floor neon establishment in downtown koshari Abu Tareq has perfected the dish. It also has a branch in Jeddah, where Saudis, nostalgic Egyptian expats and pilgrims en route to Hajj can stop and recharge.

Koucheri du Bon Coeur, Paris

In a city known for haute cuisine, those weary of cassoulets and fricassées can find solace in an unpretentious, delicious, and unashamedly humble bowl of koshari at this joint in the 18th arrondissement.

koshari 101, Milan

It’s no surprise that Milan, with one of Europe’s largest Egyptian communities, should have a koshari spot to satisfy the appetites of those missing the flavours of home.

koshari Korner, Sydney

Over 14,400 km from Cairo, koshari Korner - which first began as a pop-up stall in 2016 - has taken the vegan crowd of the Sydney suburb of Marrickville by storm.
