New Film Programme Celebrates 100 Years of Youssef Chahine

Zawya Cinema is hosting a film programme marking 100 years since the birth of Youssef Chahine, presented in collaboration with The Youssef Chahine Archive.

Titled ‘What Now, My Love?’, the programme opens with a retrospective of Chahine’s early work, a period he described as his “spring,” spanning from his debut film Papa Amin (1950) to Cairo Station (1958).

Running from April 15th to May 16th, the programme includes archival material from Chahine’s body of work, some of which will be presented publicly for the first time. It also features films by other directors whose work engaged with themes similar to those explored in his early career.

Screenings will take place primarily at Zawya Cinema, with French-language films hosted at the French Institute in Cairo and Italian films at the Italian Institute in Cairo. All screenings are scheduled for 7 PM.

The programme is curated by culture journalist Yasmine Zohdi and film programmer Ahmed Refaat, bringing together a selection of films and materials that revisit the early phase of Chahine’s career within a broader cinematic context.

Tickets for Zawya screenings are available through the cinema’s box office and online platform.
