Zaha Hadid Architects Design Discovery Tower in NEOM’s Trojena
Located near the Gulf of Aqaba, in Saudi’s Red Sea mountains, the crystal-like tower will overlook a tourist hotspot.
World-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled plans for a dramatic skyscraper in Trojena, NEOM’s ski resort city. Located on a mountain overlooking a man-made freshwater lake, the crystal-like tower is planned to become a landmark of Trojena, which was master-planned by German studio LAVA architects.
Named Discovery Tower, the design was first presented at the Cityscape Conference in Riyadh, with a crystalline exterior made out of a plethora of columns that get thinner at the top. While precise details are yet to be disclosed, the tower is expected to host retail outlets, high-end dining, exhibition spaces and observation decks at varying heights.
Located 50 km from the Gulf of Aqaba in Saudi’s Red Sea mountains, Trojena is conceived as a tourist destination offering a variety of experiences, including year-round outdoor skiing and adventure sports. Discovery Tower is planned to become a landmark of Trojena and will be connected to the lakeside development with a cable car.
The Zaha Hadid Architects design will provide a platform for artistic experiences, as it will be accompanied by an open-air museum located nearby the two mountain peaks that surround the tower. The infamous architecture firm also revealed the design of a second structure within Trojena, a lookout pavilion.
The ‘Mountain Observatory’ will be anchored on the slope of the mountain. Appearing in the renderings as an organic structure with several open platforms, the structure is designed to provide its visitors with access to the mountain’s geology through innovative technologies.
Both the Discovery Tower and its Mountain Observatory are set to provide a dream-like experience hovering over NEOM’s Red Sea topography to the 700,000 visitors and 7,000 permanent residents expected in Trojena by the year 2030.
