Chromosome of Happiness Raises Awareness About Down Syndrome
Through Facebook and Instagram, this social media platform works avidly to raise awareness of this congenital condition and cultivate a safe and open space for people with Down syndrome.

Chromosome of Happiness is a growing platform for individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of people with Down syndrome in Egypt. Through Facebook and Instagram, this social media platform works avidly to raise awareness of this congenital condition and cultivate a safe and open space for people with Down syndrome and their supporters to engage, connect and create opportunities together.
Founder Samuel Samy launched the platform in memory of his late sister, Maria. “My elder sister had Down syndrome and I was lucky to share 19 years of my life with her before she passed away,” Samy tells #CairoScene. “During her journey I have witnessed the ups and downs of parenthood, early interventions, the educational system, and the society we live in on top of all that. Growing up in Egypt, there have been a lot of challenges to sustain a life with purpose for people with Down syndrome.”
It’s not just about empathy and charity, Samy stresses. The platform looks to celebrate the uniqueness of people with Down syndrome, and highlight the good they’ve done for the world despite the doubts of others.
Chromosome of Happiness works proactively to create better opportunities for people with Down Syndrome through early intervention, advancing education at all levels, inclusion in sports and international competitions, and finding jobs that fit their capabilities and allow employers to invest in their talents.
