60,000 Trees Planted Across Makkah Holy Sites in Greening Drive
Green space has tripled versus last year’s Hajj season.
More than 60,000 trees have been planted across the holy sites in Makkah as part of a greening initiative aimed at improving environmental conditions for pilgrims.
The programme is being led by Kidana Development Company, a subsidiary of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites.
The latest phase included the planting of 40,000 trees, following an earlier effort that added more than 20,000.
The initiative has resulted in a threefold increase in green spaces compared to the previous Hajj season, contributing to cooler and more comfortable conditions for visitors.
The effort forms part of broader environmental goals aligned with national sustainability programmes, including the Saudi Green Initiative, with a focus on balancing development with environmental preservation in high-density pilgrimage areas
Alongside the tree planting, attention has also been drawn to Al-Mughmas Valley Park, a natural reserve that is being developed as an eco-tourism destination.
The park features desert and semi-desert vegetation suited to high temperatures and limited rainfall, supporting a range of wildlife including birds, insects and reptiles.
