Alexandria Coastal Protection Works Target Summer Completion
Two phases covering Bir Massoud to El-Mahrousa and Laurent are moving ahead, with beach restoration planned before next summer.
Two phases of Alexandria’s coastal protection programme are moving ahead, with beach restoration and shoreline works targeted for completion before the coming summer season. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said the projects cover a two-kilometre stretch from Bir Massoud to El-Mahrousa and a 600-metre section in Laurent.
The first phase focuses on the Bir Massoud–El-Mahrousa stretch, while the second is intended to protect the Corniche seawall and road in Laurent and restore the area’s sandy beach. Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam reviewed progress with Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia, with officials also discussing a proposed coastal development between Mostafa Kamel and the Eastern Harbour.
Attia said proposals for the Sidi Gaber to Shatby stretch combine coastal protection with preservation of the Corniche road, beach restoration and improvements to the waterfront’s urban appearance. Sewilam said completed projects in Alexandria have already helped slow shoreline retreat, protect property and restore beaches at Bir Massoud and El-Mahrousa.
Previous interventions in the city have included protection works around Qaitbay Citadel, the Montazah seawall and sections of the Corniche, alongside breakwaters, beach nourishment and rehabilitation works at Stanley, Abu Qir, Mandara and the Eastern Harbour. Nationally, the Cabinet Media Centre said coastal protection works have been completed along 120 kilometres of shoreline, with longer-term planning extending to 2100.
