Cairo Metro Line 4 First Phase to Open in 2028

The first phase of Cairo Metro Line 4 is scheduled to open in the first half of 2028, following the completion of a 6.35-kilometre tunnelling section between Hadaeq El Ashgar and Pyramids stations.

The milestone marks progress on a line expected to carry around 2 million passengers per day, according to the National Authority for Tunnels.

Spanning 19 kilometres with 17 stations, the first phase will run from the western edge of 6th of October City to Fustat, passing key points including the Grand Egyptian Museum, Remaya Square and Haram Street. The line will connect with existing metro lines at Giza Station (Line 2) and El-Malek El-Saleh (Line 1).

Once operational, Line 4 will provide a direct link between 6th of October City and New Cairo, extending metro access to areas including Faisal, Omraneya, Nasr City and Al-Azhar University. Construction is being carried out by a consortium of Egyptian contractors, with multiple tunnel boring machines operating simultaneously across different sections of the route.

A separate consortium including Mitsubishi Corporation and Orascom Construction is handling electromechanical systems and rolling stock, with 23 trains currently in production and the first expected in May 2026.

Additional phases are under study to extend the line further east and west, including connections to the New Capital and Capital Airport, as well as interchanges with planned monorail and light rail systems.

The project is expected to strengthen links between residential areas, transport hubs and major cultural landmarks, including the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
