East Nile Monorail Begins Passenger Service on May 6th 2026

Passenger services for the first phase of the East Nile Monorail will begin on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026, connecting Marshal Tantawi Station in New Cairo with Justice City Station in the New Administrative Capital.

The service is being operated by the Ministry of Transport and is intended to facilitate daily commuting between New Cairo and the New Capital, particularly for employees working in government institutions and offices based there.

The initial phase includes 16 stations: Marshal Tantawi, One Ninety, Air Hospital, Al-Narges, Investors, Lotus, Golden Square, Beit Al-Watan, Al-Fattah Al-Aleem Mosque, R1 District, R2 District, Business District, City of Arts and Culture, Government District, Egypt Mosque, and Justice City.

The route connects residential areas to key destinations including administrative buildings, hospitals, universities, commercial centres, and cultural venues.

A three-tier fare system has been introduced based on travel distance, with tickets starting at EGP 20 for up to five stations, rising to EGP 40 for journeys of up to 10 stations. Fares for longer trips are set to range between EGP 60 and EGP 80 once the full line is operational.

The first phase also provides interchange with the Light Rail Transit at the City of Arts and Culture Station. Trains operating on the line are air-conditioned and include onboard monitoring systems, inter-car connections, and digital displays showing route information.

Carriages are fitted with designated wheelchair spaces and illuminated maps to support accessibility for passengers with different needs.

According to the National Authority for Tunnels, the monorail forms part of a wider plan to expand electric mass transit and reduce congestion in Greater Cairo as administrative functions shift to the New Capital.

The full monorail network under development includes two lines extending approximately 100 kilometres in total, linking Nasr City to the New Capital and Mohandessein to 6 October City.
