Green Public Investments Reach EGP 215.5 Billion in FY 2024/2025
Transport projects accounted for more than 70% of Egypt's green public investments during the fiscal year.
Green public investments in Egypt reached approximately EGP 215.5 billion during fiscal year 2024/2025, according to the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, with transport projects accounting for the largest share of spending.
Green transport projects, including the metro and the high-speed electric train, represented 71.5% of total green public investments. They were followed by projects under the Decent Life initiative at 10.5%, including wastewater treatment plants, canal rehabilitation and drinking water infrastructure. Sustainable urban development accounted for 8%, while environmental improvement projects made up 4.5%.
Agriculture and irrigation projects represented 3% of total green investments, while the clean energy and telecommunications sectors accounted for 1.5%. Overall, 87% of the investments were allocated to climate mitigation projects, with the remaining 13% directed towards climate adaptation.
The ministry said the government is expanding environmentally friendly public investment under the National Strategy for Climate Change while increasing the use of renewable and alternative energy sources. Under its 2024–2030 economic strategy, Egypt aims to raise green investments to 75% of total investment by 2030 and increase the green economy's contribution to GDP to at least 5%.
For fiscal year 2026/2027, the government is targeting green investments to account for around 60% of total public investment, up from 15% in 2020/2021, as it continues integrating environmental sustainability standards into national development planning.
