Greening Cairo Initiative to Turn Vacant Sites Into Parks
The project will convert evacuated urban spaces into green areas as restoration works continue across historic Cairo.
A new initiative aimed at increasing green space across the capital will see evacuated urban sites converted into public green areas as restoration and redevelopment projects continue across historic Cairo.
Known as 'Greening Cairo', the project was announced during a meeting reviewing progress on the rehabilitation of Islamic, historical and heritage sites throughout the city. According to officials, the initiative is intended to increase residents' access to green space by transforming vacant plots created through ongoing redevelopment works into landscaped public areas.
The announcement comes as restoration projects continue across Khedivial Cairo, Historic Cairo and Islamic Cairo, where authorities are undertaking conservation works on landmarks, infrastructure and public spaces.
Officials stated that the wider programme aims to preserve the architectural, historical and cultural character of Cairo's heritage districts while improving their accessibility and attractiveness to visitors.
Plans also include the development of integrated tourist routes linking historical mosques, shrines and other heritage sites to create a more connected visitor experience.
During the meeting, updates were presented on restoration works being carried out across a number of historical and religious landmarks, alongside efforts to improve surrounding infrastructure and public spaces.
According to the government, the combination of restoration projects, public realm improvements and the new greening initiative is intended to strengthen central Cairo's role as a cultural and tourism destination. Officials also highlighted the recently launched 'Art Street' project in Downtown Cairo as an example of efforts to expand cultural and artistic activities within the city's historic core.
