More Than One Million Trained in Ethical AI in Saudi Arabia
The SAMAI initiative has exceeded its original target, with training covering responsible AI use, data protection and safety.
Saudi Arabia’s SAMAI initiative has surpassed its target of training one million people in artificial intelligence, according to Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, CEO of the Saudi Data and AI Authority’s capacity building sector.
Al-Ghamdi said the programme was launched to build practical AI knowledge and skills for use in everyday life and the workplace, with participation now exceeding the original target.
A significant part of the training focuses on ethical AI, responsible use and data protection, including guidance on what information should be shared with AI systems and which tools can be used safely.
Al-Ghamdi made the comments during the 4th UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI in Riyadh, co-hosted by the Saudi Data and AI Authority and the International Centre for AI Research and Ethics. The forum brought together more than 25 ministers alongside technology companies and international participants to discuss AI safety and responsible deployment.
SDAIA has been embedding ethical considerations across its broader AI capacity-building programmes rather than treating them as a separate training track.
National AI frameworks and curricula announced in January were designed to align education and professional development with local needs, followed by additional capacity-building frameworks for professionals, educators and training providers.
Guidance for developers includes selecting appropriate models and datasets, reducing bias, preventing the use of AI for fraud or violence, and complying with privacy and data protection requirements.
